BAM! The First Attack Hits

My wife was hit with a very severe panic attack while she was driving the car. As you can imagine it could have resulted in a nasty end for us both. As soon as we knew we were safe and the initial shock had died down, shock for us both I might add. We made an appointment to see our doctor.

After the lecture that it’s all in her head we eventually got prescribed beta blockers. I say “we” because even though it was my wife having it, I was feeling like part of it all. If that makes any sense. The drugs would (he promised) stop her heart from racing at the onset of an attack, thus stopping the attack. All good in theory.

We tried going out in the car again and sure enough, at the same place she felt another attack looming. The result was a panic attack but with a calm heart rate. She described it as worse than normal as she felt both out of control and calm at the same time.

Put The Drugs Where They Belong….In The Trash

We trashed the beta blockers as soon as we got safely home. My wife suffered for about nine months not being able to get behind the wheel. She never had a panic attack either, which was a mixed blessing.

She was determined we couldn’t allow the situation to continue. Not driving wasn’t a long term option for her. I constantly searched the internet for help and advice, and to be honest, hopefully a magic cure. We never found anything that really worked for long.

We Tried Hundreds…And Then Some

The search continued until we happened on another so called “cure”. We thought we may as well give it a go. We knew any success wasn’t down to drugs as she wasn’t taking them anymore. Fingers crossed it was looking good. The first attempt at driving and she got the overwhelming senses of an attack coming. She put the system into gear and managed to come out unscathed. So far so good.

In our debriefing session later she said that although there was a panic attack, it was no where near as bad as before because of the new system. Just knowing she had been able to lower the intensity was a huge boost in itself. She now felt the power within herself to stop the next attack dead. She didn’t quite manage this.

Bit By Bit

Although not stopping it fully, she did low the intensity again. Every time she had an attack she had the ability to lower the force of it. It wasn’t too long (weeks) before she felt confident enough to see an attack coming and to halt it from going any further.

Panic Symptoms - Recognise Any Of These?

You may be having them, and you may not even realise it. When I say “having them” I mean panic symptoms. If you understand what the symptoms and signs are, then you are on the road to stopping them all together.

Rapid heartbeat & shallow breath.

This is a major symptom of panic attacks. If you have these then it’s likely you are having panic attacks. Of course there may be an underlying health problem and it’s best to get checked out first. If it does turn out to be a panic attack then time is critical.

Always feeling irritated.

We live in such a fast moving world it’s kind of easy to get irritated with people most of the time. But this can easily be another panic symptom. If you are having this symptom coupled with others, act now.

Insomnia.

Not being able to sleep can be caused by a whole number of things. One of the reasons you may be losing sleep is that it’s a symptom of anxiety disorder. It’s worth investigating further if you are having trouble sleeping.

Constant worrying.

We all worry, and we all worry all the time. Most of us don’t dwell on it. The worry seems to disappear as quick as it came. There’s a saying that if this time next year you won’t even think about it, why worry about it now. Worrying all the time about the slightest problems could well be a sign of anxiety disorder.

What can be done?

If you think you are experiencing any type of anxiety or panic disorder. You should first get checked over by a doctor, just to be sure. You may even be able to quell any fears if you get the all clear from your doctor.

If however you are pretty sure there’s no underlying medical problems and you are still having some or all of these panic symptoms then you can do something about it. There are some really successful techniques out there that have worked for lots of people just like you. The good thing is these techniques don’t involve nasty drugs or hypnosis.

Anxiety attacks, or panic attacks as they are more or less the same thing, are on the increase. The cause of the increase isn’t fully understood, but modern life with all its pressure and stress could be a factor. But the fact remains they are causing more and more people no end of problems.

How can you know you are suffering an anxiety attack? That’s a difficult question to answer as the symptoms are quite wide ranging and can vary from mild to the downright frightening. You may just feel a bit of a hot sweat. But you may also feel like your heart is bursting out of your chest.

I’m sure if you were having the latter symptoms you would be aware right now that you are having panic attacks and need help to stop them. If your symptoms are mild though, you may not even realise it’s a panic or anxiety attack. These mild symptoms could well be warning signs of something worse to come.

My wife suffered a bad panic attack while she was out driving our car. It wasn’t the fact she had suffered an attack that hit her worst, but the fact she could easily have hit and killed someone or maybe even herself. This scenario just doesn’t bear thinking about.

An anxiety attack, or panic attack as they are more or less the same thing, is a frightening thing. I was witness to my wife suffering a panic attack while at the wheel of our car. To say I was scared is the understatement of the century.

There’s a simple test you can take if you suspect you might be having panic attack symptoms. All you do is go through a series of check boxes. Select either yes or no. Then look at the notes at the end and it will let you know whether to seek further advice.

The test is basically a big list of possible anxiety symptoms. If you ticked one or more boxes then you may well need get further help, fast! The last thing you want is to suffer an attack at the wrong moment, like driving your car!

Could you identify a panic attack if you had to? Let me tell you it’s one of the most frightening things I’ve experienced. And it’s not even me suffering from them! I was in the car while my wife was driving when she was hit with a panic attack.

I sure wish we’d had the chance to know beforehand by taking an anxiety test. Sadly we had to find out with a full blown attack.

I don’t mind telling you I was scared to death. I’m mid forties and I’ve never seen anything like the thing that my wife was in the grip of. “In the grip of” is a good description as well. It was like two giant invisible hands were crushing her.

I reckon millions of people don’t even realise they are having a panic attack, but they are. There are different levels of anxiety attacks but it still boils down to a panic attack. It’s not all doom and gloom as they can be easily conquered no matter how bad.

We saw a handful of doctors who all had a similar viewpoint. They’d repeatedly say there’s nothing to worry about, that it’s all in her head. I’ve seen these attacks and there is definitely something to fear if you don’t know how to stop them.

Who cares if it’s all in your head? The fact is when it grips you, you know you’re gripped! Here are just a few symptoms to look out for. If they seem familiar then you may be a sufferer. If you see something you recognize in this list then act before you get a potentially deadly panic attack.
